The sports day called Undōkai is a uniquely Japanese event—a community-wide “festival” where people compete and enjoy together, a cultural phenomenon rarely seen outside Japan. Featuring team competitions, music, a lunch of rice balls made with locally grown Echigo-Tsumari rice, and vibrant decorations, it can be seen as a form of comprehensive art that combines elements of physical education, music, visual arts, and home economics.

The Art Field Day invites a diverse group of participants, including technical interns and international students working and studying in Japan, immigrants and refugees, elderly and disabled residents of local facilities, and children who cannot travel far due to family circumstances. Together with local residents and artists involved in the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, around 500 people take part in the event.

In a world marked by division and unsettled conditions, the event offers people living under challenging circumstances or facing difficulties a chance to enjoy a day of fun, feel the safe and peaceful atmosphere of Echigo-Tsumari, make friends from around the world, and experience a sense of connection. Guided by this vision, the Art Field Day continues as an event that embodies the Triennale’s spirit of “art of hospitality.”
