First held in 2000 in the Echigo-Tsumari region of Niigata Prefecture, the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale is an internationally recognized art festival set in the satoyama landscape, based on the philosophy that “Human beings are part of nature.” Works have been presented in a wide variety of locations across the region, including rice fields, vacant houses, closed schools, shopping streets, parks, and train stations, exploring new relationships between people, nature, art, and local communities. Local residents, artists, and volunteers from Japan and abroad collaborate on the festival, which has been highly regarded worldwide as a pioneering model for regional revitalization through art. Under the general direction of Fram Kitagawa, we are comprehensively involved in the planning, production, management, and publicity of the triennale.
